The term “astasia-abasia,” first used in the nineteenth century, is an early description of a functional gait disorders, with astasia relating to the inability to stand upright and independently, and abasia denoting the inability to walk in a coordinated manner (Citation 35). WebPsychogenic movement disorders (PMD) are challenging to diagnose and to treat. Since the nineteenth century, PMDs were recognized and described in painstaking detail. In the modern neurology clinic, PMDs may comprise 2-25% of the patient population.
